Yeovil Town 0-0 Coventry City

Another long trip, another dull performance and another set of dropped points… Ok we may have picked up one point, but is it really good enough? Today was a game which I felt we had to win, and on another day we may have done just that. A Gary Madine penalty miss in the second half was pivotal as it seemed to suck the life out of the Sky Blues who had made a bright start to the second period.

The League One table isn’t good viewing for us fans, as we sit just 3 points above the drop zone with many teams having at least one game in hand on us. And as I said before, I’m not sure if we have the quality or the mentality to get out of the bottom four if we fall in to it. Admittedly, today’s performance was better than last weeks show at Gillingham, but Yeovil seemed to want it more than us – it’s very worrying.

I was very disappointed with our front three today, especially Gary Madine who in my opinion looked uninterested and lethargic. Frank Nouble also struggled to get in to the game; he is a player who possesses undoubted quality but I fail to see how Pressley believes he is effective on the left flank, he isn’t a winger! Simeon Jackson is a player who’s more suited to the wing position due to his pace, but again I think he fails to have a real impact when he’s deployed wide right.

A positive is a clean sheet… The defence did their job and stopped the ball hitting the back of the net, and I think a lot of that credit has to go to new signing Jamie Jones who occupied the goal. One thing you notice straight away with him is his confidence, he was communicating non-stop throughout the game which can only improve the confidence of the back four. Reda Johnson’s return also seemed to add more stability with his physical presence and want to win the ball missed when he’s out injured! I think another mention must go to Jordan Willis, the young defender slotted in to right back brilliantly and had a really positive game; he has to start next week in my opinion.

The next topic of discussion is the midfield… I just think that we lack a lot of bite or creativity. Yeovil won the battle in the middle with real ease, City lacking any real physical presence in there. It offered little going forward either which obviously contributes to our lack of goals, although Fleck did dictate the game for a short period which is something he needs to do more often; his passing ability is superb, he needs to utilise it, along with shooting – something he never seems to do without possessing a fierce left foot.

I know this season is going to be a long one, staying in the division now the priority (the dream of the playoffs is long gone), but we need to start picking up points and quickly.
